Radars

This page contains an incomplete list of publicly available weather radar imagery worldwide.

Tropical Globe's Database of Publicly Accessible Weather Radars

For the United States, only NEXRAD radar sites are displayed, not Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) radar sites or radars from television stations. For other countries, we also mostly only include radar sites from government agencies. We eventually intend to add government owned radar sites for all countries with coastal regions that are impacted by tropical cyclones. This is not yet complete.

The ranges on the map indicate the maximum range of publicly available data, either currently available or in the past. Green circles indicate radars for which radar data is publicly available. Red circles indicate radars that do not currently have data available to the public in real-time, but either has in the past (and the radar could still be operating), could eventually be available in real-time or at times has had imagery occasionally released (such as through social media). Some radar sites have no range noted but may be included for other reasons. Click the radar site for more information. This page and map will never have a complete listing of all radar sites. It is intended to be mostly about radar sites that currently have radar data available publicly.

Most of the radar sites worldwide come from the WMO Weather Radar Database. (About) Some of the European radar data comes from the Operational Programme for the Exchange of Weather Radar Information (OPERA). You can view a map of European radars on their site here. Further verification was done by us for every radar site on the map to try to verify the correct placement on the map. This was done mainly based on Google Earth. Other sources were used when necessary. The coordinates are not official.

For links to most of the world's meteorological services, many of which are not listed on this page, view the list of National Services for World Meteorological Organization Members.

United States Radars

Site Thumbnail - Weather Underground Radar

This is probably the best radar site available, with storm tracks, the ability to zoom in and a variety of other features. For additional radar types on the Weather Underground site, click the box above the radar image once you have selected a radar site. It also has radar data for Canada and Australia.

Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) radar sites are available as well. Once you select a region, use the "Radar Stations" drop down box and look for sites that have "(TDWR)" next to them.
Site Thumbnail - Weather Underground's WunderMap - Interactive Radar

Weather Underground's WunderMap allows you to view radar data combined with weather stations, satellite data and a wide variety of other features. You can choose what you want on the map. You can zoom in as close as your house or as far away as you want. It also has radar data for Canada, Australia and for some of Europe.
Site Thumbnail - National Weather Service Radar

This is another good site for radar. There are also regional radar views below the main map of National Doppler Radar Sites. For loops that don't require Flash, visit the Standard Version tab, which has GIF image loops. You can also view the imagery in Google Earth by visiting this page.
Site Thumbnail - Intellicast Interactive Radar and Regional Radar

Intellicast is owned by The Weather Company, which also owns the Weather Underground and Weather.com. They have an interactive map you can visit that is like the Wundermap. This site also has layers such as clouds, temperatures and winds. It also has data for the areas that the Wundermap has radar data available for.

The regional radar is good to use to view regional radar views. The radar loops are also longer which is a nice feature to use.
Site Thumbnail - Weather.com - Interactive Radar

This is another site owned by The Weather Company that has an interactive map with layers such as clouds, temperatures and winds. It also has data for the areas that the Wundermap and Intellicast Interactive Radar has radar data available for.

North & South American Radars

  • Argentina
Argentina's radars are on a variety of websites. Some radar sites appear on multiple websites.
    - National System of Meteorological Radars (SiNaRaMe) - 240km range loops for about a dozen radar sites, including the others below.
    - National Metereological Service (SMN) - 240km range loops of Pergamino, Paraná, Anguil, Córdoba and Ezeiza (Buenos Aires). A dynamic version of their display can be found here.
    - National Agricultural Technology Institute (INTA - 240km range loops of Anguil, Pergamino and Paraná.
  • Aruba (Netherlands)
As of updating this page for this country, they link to a radar site in Venezuela. Radar is also available from Curaçao (Netherlands).
  • Bahamas - Site unavailable as of updating this page for this country
The Bahamas is currently upgrading its radar capability. In 2016 they signed a contract for four new doppler radars. Their weather service's site has not been available since 2016 and radar imagery from their old radar had not been available publicly for many years before that. In regard to the new radars, in a March 2017 press release from the Bahamas government they said "The first one has been established on New Providence and the other three will be in Grand Bahama, Abaco, and Long Island." "It is anticipated that the installation of the radar will be before the end of April with the entire operation being completed by November 2018." It doesn't appear that real-time data from any of the sites are publicly available yet. The first new radar is located about 50 meters southwest from the old radar on the island of New Providence at Lynden Pindling International Airport (Nassau International Airport). The old radar "will be refurbished and upgraded and then installed in Ragged Island, bringing the total to five Doppler radar, covering the entire country." On May 25th, 2018 a radar image from the new radar appeared on Facebook here. Based on news articles, the weather service starting getting data from the first new radar in 2017. The range on the map uses 250km, the range in that image that was posted. However, documentation on the type of radar that was installed indicate it can be used up to 500km, though it is unclear what range of imagery will be available, if any, publicly. The weather page on Bahamas' official government site also links to the site that is not available.
  • Barbados
150km, 250km and 400km range loops are available.

Barbados also has an excellent Caribbean Radar Composites page. Be sure to check the imagery there if the Barbados radar has any issues:

  • Belize
50km, 250km and 400km range loops are available.
  • Bermuda (U.K.)
100km and 250km range loops are available. Additional imagery, including an approximately 430km range loop, has also been available in the past here. (user name and password both "guest") When available, that additional imagery has required the use of Java.
  • Brazil
Brazil's radars are on a variety of websites. Some radar sites appear on multiple websites. To view radar data for Brazil it's best to use our map. Our map organizes the links below for each individual radar site, as well as present additional information.

(link to tweet where it first appeared) The director of their meteorological service began posting images on her Twitter feed on June 20th, 2018. In a reply to that first tweet containing imagery, she said that "When the trial period ends, the next step will be to make it available to the general public." (translated by Google) In a June 11th, 2018 tweet she said "Technicians of @Onamet receiving training in the handling of the new software and hardware of the Punta Cana weather radar." (translated) In the tweet she posted pictures of the technicians receiving training.

  • South Africa
South Africa is updating its radar network. As of updating this page for this country, there is only one image available for all of South Africa. Their site previously had imagery for each radar site, but that older site is no longer available. Some of the radar sites listed on the map may no longer be available, such as sites where there is a new radar nearby. Some of the ranges for some of the radar sites on the old site have varied from 200km to 300km. The ranges on this map reflect the largest available range on the old site. Because there is only a single rectangular image that is available as of updating this page for this country, the ranges shown on the map may not actually reflect the publicly available range in that one image.

Radars from Botswana (Bokaa) and Mozambique (Beira and Xai-Xai) were last available on South Africa's site in 2007. Those countries do not appear to have the radar data on their own sites as of updating this page for this country. You can click the country name to view their meteorological service.

Asian Radars

  • Japan
Japan's available radar data includes areas within the polygon shaped area defined on the map. The range of what is available varies. The composite image of all Japanese radars seems to include a larger area than what we include in the map. The map we have is the approximate area for which closeup imagery is available.
  • Taiwan
    460km range loops are available.
